Cleaning and disinfection of respirators

  • All respirators in routine use should be cleaned and sanitized on a periodic basis.
  • Respirators used non-routinely should be cleaned and sanitized after each use. Filters and cartridges should be replaced.

 

The following procedures are recommended for cleaning and disinfecting the respirator:

Storage of respirator

  • The respirators should be protected against sunlight, heat, extreme cold, excessive moisture, damaging chemicals or other contaminants.
  • Respirators placed at work areas for emergency use should be quickly accessible at all times and be clearly marked.
  • Routinely used respirators should be placed in sealable plastic bags.
  • Respirators should be packed or stored so that the facepiece and exhalation valves will rest in a normal position and not be crushed.
